Stop Shrinking and Start Living Fully After 50

I got choked up while recording my podcast recently as I was speaking about limiting beliefs. In that moment, I realized I still had one about not being worthy to be happy. Talk about a kick in the gut! After all the personal development work I’ve done over the last 15 years, this faulty BS (belief system) still rears its ugly head from time to time.

And, thankfully, that personal development work has paid off because as soon as those tears welled up, I reframed them as happy tears. In that moment, I chose to believe my soul is happy that I am living life in alignment with what it has wanted for me for a very long time.

The Things We Hold That Were Never Really Ours

That feeling of not being worthy is a common limiting belief. We often pick it up in childhood when we’re told “no.” To an immature brain, it feels like you’re being rejected, even though it’s probable it’s the behavior you’re doing that’s being rejected, not you.

Not feeling worthy can lead to behaviors that don’t serve you. For me, I adopted a people-pleasing strategy growing up because of all the drama in my house. I figured it would be the best way for me to avoid getting yelled at for something. I tried to be the “good” girl. And if you can relate, you know how exhausting that can be!

I kept up that strategy as an adult to my detriment, especially when it came to my marriage. There came a point after 20-some years together when I realized I wasn’t asking for what I wanted. I was settling for whatever my husband wanted so I wouldn’t make waves with him. He had a temper like my mother (thankfully, it did mellow over the years), but those early outbursts stayed with me. I didn’t want to risk rocking the boat.

The Fear Underneath It All

Fear had become the driving force in keeping myself small. But as I began doing personal development work, I began to recognize that I deserved more in my life. The big awakening came for me when I began embracing the L in my L.O.V.E. Method which stands for Let go and Let God. I wanted to embrace letting go of this fear, even though it had kept me safe for decades.

There’s a clever acronym for fear: “False Evidence Appearing Real.” Once I realized the fear was just a byproduct of that old, protective survival mechanism, it lost its power to dictate my future.

Opening Your Heart to Let God In

“Letting God” isn’t about being dogmatic; it’s about opening your heart to receive guidance from a source greater than your logical mind. When I started my meditation practice 17 years ago, I didn’t know it would lead me to where I am today. It was the “quiet time” that allowed me to finally hear what my soul was whispering.

I also began utilizing energy healing and light language, which have been instrumental in helping me clear energetic blocks that my rational mind couldn’t touch. When you move beyond the logic of the brain and into the frequency of the heart, you stop chasing external validation and start acting on divine intuition. You stop settling for “fine” and start designing a life that feels like home.

Identifying Where You Are Settling Today

“Design my life my way? Easy for you to say, Gloria.” I hear you. You might think, I can’t do that right now because of X, Y, or Z.

You don’t have to overhaul your entire existence today, but you can start by auditing your life. Are you settling in your marriage, your career, or your daily routine? We often settle because we’re trying to keep the peace or because we fear the unknown. I challenge you to make two lists today to see where you might be holding back:

  • The Joy Audit: What is currently bringing you genuine joy and fulfillment?
  • The Settling List: Where are you compromising your truth simply to keep the peace or remain in your comfort zone?

It’s Never Too Late to Pivot

If you feel like you’re running out of time, I have one final reminder for you: I was in my late 50s when I took the bold step to consciously redesign my life. It is never too late to reclaim your power, set boundaries that honor your spirit, and choose happiness over history.

You deserve to live a life that vibrates with joy, peace, and authenticity. You are an amazing human being, and your unique wisdom is needed in this world.
