TRANSCRIPT – Stop “Fixing” Yourself – Start Leading from Your Dark Side

The Confidence Catalyst’s Confession

I’m curious about all of you business owners who are listening or watching to this podcast today. Who’s really sitting in that CEO chair? Your highest self or your shadow self? Well, no matter how you answered that question, I’ve got good news for you. Because today we’re going to be talking about, well, I should say, actually, we’re not going to be talking about fixing what’s quote unquote broken.

Instead, we’re going to talk about how to make friends with the parts of yourself you’d rather keep hidden. But before we get started, I want to welcome you to Live Love Engage. I am Gloria Grace, confident confidence catalyst, who’s having trouble speaking today. But that’s okay. Hey, you know, we’re not perfect.

What the heck? Let me try it again. I am Gloria Grace confidence catalyst who empowers women over 50 through my love method and energy healing to boldly live life on their terms.

Operating from Shadow Self vs. Highest Self in Business

So, yeah, being the CEO. Hmm. Are you the, Are you, are you operating from your highest self or is it your shadow self? You? And for me, I know I’ve definitely operated from that shadow self in my career as, as a business owner or entrepreneur or even just starting out as a freelance SEO copywriter.

When Hiring Help Triggers Control Issues

The. You know, I’ve talked about this on the show before and I know if you were a business owner, you’ve probably, probably heard this many times from lots of different people that if you want to grow your business, eventually you can’t just be the sole person in your business. You need to hire help, you know, even if it’s just on a part time basis. And I reached that point in my business where I realized that if I wanted to be able to continue serving my clients at a high level, that I needed to get help with managing like social media marketing, for crying out loud, and emails and all of that. And so I decided to hire a virtual assistant.

Great, right? You’d think, except that I started getting very frustrated with her because she wasn’t doing what I wanted her to do and she wasn’t communicating with me very well. And I finally gave up and said, you know, this isn’t working and I’m just not going to need your services anymore. Even though I really did need her services, the problem was not really with her. Now, first off, I should, I should have backed up and said that I had been really reluctant to hire someone for a long time because when you start your business and it’s your baby, you know, you, you don’t like turning over control, especially because, and, and this was Part of my issue with her is that I felt like she wasn’t doing as good a job as I could do in some of these areas.

And where it was take, maybe it was taking longer. I don’t know. This was a long time ago now, but it was just really frustrating. I think it was mostly that she wasn’t doing things the way I would have done. And because I wanted.

Setting Clear Expectations: The Key to Delegation Success

I have this idea of how it was supposed to be, and that’s kind of a control issue. But as I said, it really wasn’t her fault necessarily. She was doing what she thought was right. The problem was I didn’t set expectations at the beginning. I did not give her a clear, even instruction on how I wanted things done.

I didn’t, you know, do like. Like nowadays I could do a nice screen capture, you know, and go through how I do things. And then I could have just given her that video and said, okay, this is how I do it. I’d like you to do it this way. Unless you have a more efficient way of doing it, which is.

I’m also open to. And. And I should have said that I want to hear from you on, you know, Fridays or, you know, and so we can over what you did during the week. And then these are my plans for the following week, which the next time I decided to hire someone. That’s what I did.

And we had a much better relationship. Even when at one point she messed up and with something with my email, I remember, and she was so apologetic. She was so sorry. And it was like, you know, it’s okay. You know, you’re human, you make mistakes.

We fixed it and, you know, it was okay, but we had a much better relationship because I set up expectations. And then I also, you know, made. Made peace with that part of myself that want to be in control. And I allowed her to come up with some better ways to do things, because not everybody is gonna. Somebody might have experience in an area that maybe I. I did, but she might have a more efficient way or a more efficient way that works for her.

Honoring Different Working Styles and Personalities

Yeah, let me. Let me clarify that because, you know, I think two people can attack a problem in a certain way, and they may think that this is the best way. Sure, it is for them. It’s for their personality, and that’s why it works. But somebody else would look at, say, that’s crazy.

I’m never going to create graphics that way. Are you insane? You know, as an example, that’s going to take me too long to do. No, I’d much Rather do it this way, and because that’s their personality, that’s their experience, and that’s how they’ve learned to do it, and it does work for them. So we have to be able to let go.

We got to let go of that, that. That tendency to control. And where does this come from?

The Roots of Control Issues and Shadow Behaviors

Well, you know, wanting to be in control for me certainly came up growing up in a home where a lot of stuff was out of my control. There was a lot of family dysfunction.

Growing Up with Alcoholism and Family Dysfunction

You know, my dad struggled with alcoholism, and then my mom was trying to deal with that and keep. Keep a roof over her head. You know, she. She had to wound up taking a job. You know, she was working in the 70s.

So we had two income families way back in the 70s. I know now it’s, you know, much more common, but it wasn’t necessarily that common back then. And I think one of the reasons was, is she couldn’t necessarily rely on my dad. So she decided to take another, take a job.

And. And some of these shadows also. So. So that’s definitely one of my control issues, because I didn’t. I would come home for school and not know, you know, what condition was dad going to be in, you know, and so in my life, wherever I could have control, I wanted to have control.

People Pleasing and Perfectionism: The Good Girl Syndrome

And that also led to other shadows that might show up in our. Not only in our personal lives, but in our business, which is things like people pleasing and perfectionism. Because also I was. I was the baby of the family. So I had.

I had two older siblings. I had an older brother and an older sister. My older brother was 14 years older than me, and my sister was 10 years older than me. So really I was like truly the. The caboose, my mother liked to say in the family.

So because they were so much older, and especially as I was growing up, they. My sister was a teenager. And so, you know, there’s a lot of angst that goes on in those teenage years. And so I would see the fights that my sister and my mother had. My brother had joined the Navy.

He left the house. He was like, I’m out of here. So I didn’t even really get to know him that much as a kid, which is a great regret of mine. However, I decided that I was going to be the good girl in the family. I was going to do my best to not arouse the ire of my mother because she had a really good, quick, explosive temper, and I didn’t like that.

How Shadow Behaviors Show Up in Your Business

So. So again, this led to things like being conflict, avoidance, and as a being in business, boy, you know, And I wrote about this in my book, Live Love, Engage how to Stop Doubting Yourself and Start Being Yourself. Because these things showed up in my business. These. These shadows that I had of, well, wanting to be in control, for one thing, but also conflict avoidance, where.

Conflict Avoidance and Pricing Your Worth

I know I’ve probably talked about this on the. On the show before, but one of my first steady clients was with a web designer for home builders, and she would have me write blog articles for her different clients. And so it was great. You know, I was doing. Writing blog articles every month.

I had this steady income coming in. It was awesome. And I was doing good work. She liked my work. And so she hired me year after year.

And it took me probably until maybe year five of working for her, maybe maybe year four, but definitely year five, I think, for sure, before I have the courage to ask for a raise. And see, when I first started, she got me really cheap because I was brand new at being a copywriter, and so I didn’t charge her a lot, but I should have been raising my rates at least a little bit every year, especially because they appreciated my value. You know, they knew they were getting good work for me, and they most likely would have been willing to pay it. So when I did finally ask for that raise, they were like, sure, okay, no problem. I was like, oh, how much money have I, you know, lost out on?

Because I didn’t have that confidence in myself also, that confidence. And I was afraid that they would say no. And so I’m just, you know, gonna go with the flow.

The Power of Awareness in Creating Change

Oh, well, it’s okay. I’ve learned. And that’s. And that’s the beauty of it, is that even if you are exhibiting some of these behaviors in your business now, you can change. The first step to change is awareness.

So, yeah, you know, it’s. Yeah, I’m looking at my notes here.

Common Causes of Shadow Self Development

Yeah, a lot of. Well, yeah, I’ll just mention a few. Few of these ways. Other. Other places or reasons why some of these shadows come up.

Parental criticism, high expectations, you know, abuse, neglect. Also bullying. You know, I. And social rejection plays a role in some of that. And I was.

Middle School Bullying and Social Rejection

You know, middle school is a tough time, and I had to take a bus to school, to our. Well, junior high. We called it junior high. Where I went, and I had a. I had to take a bus. And in the neighborhood I lived in, it was mostly boys.

So middle school, taking a bus, surrounded by boys. No other girl to. To that I could, you know, partner up with. So I was like at the mercy of these kids who love to pick on me. And I was, I was an easy target.

I had low self esteem, especially in middle school. It got better in high school. High school was a better time for me. But middle school, yeah, it was rough. So thankfully, thankfully, I got through it.

And I’m so glad that I grew up when I did and not have. Have to deal with the added pressure of social media. I, I feel so, such compassion for these kids who have been growing up in the age of social media and the social media bullying that is out there. But anyway, I digress. That’s.

That’s a topic for another day or another show, whatever. Let’s focus, Gloria. Focus. Okay. All right.

Understanding Your Personal Power Archetype

So I want to. I want to dive in deep and, and talk a little bit about archetypes and how, how you as a business owner might be showing up and, and how these shadows may show up and then what you can do to, to start making peace with them and to be able to.

What do I want to say? I guess not only make peace with them, but also then to be able to. To then.

Introducing the Four Personal Power Archetypes

What am I trying to say? What am I trying to say? To make peace with your shadow so that you can then embrace and, and really lean into your strengths. Yeah, that’s what I want to say. That’s what I want to say.

Okay, so I, it was interesting. I, I do. I. I will let you know that sometimes I do use AI to help me develop an outline for my podcast episodes. And so they came up with this wonderful idea of this boardroom and all of these lovely archetypes. And I was looking at this the other day going, I have my own archetypes.

Wait a minute. I’ve done this work before, and yes, I have. And in fact, I did. I created a whole quiz where you can discover your personal power archetype as a midlife entrepreneur and you can take the quiz. In fact, you might even want to.

Oh, yeah, let’s see. I didn’t even have this in my notes. This is a good idea I’m having right now. Thank you, higher Self, for helping me out. You might want to pause this, Pause this podcast right now and go take my quiz.

You can go to Bit Ly Personal Power Quiz, and each word is capitalized. So, so it’s Personal Power Quiz, or just go to my website. Just go to gloriarand.com actually, and you’ll see the link for it right there up on top. Go to gloriarand.com or gloria gracerand.com either way, they’ll both take you there and take the quiz and see what your personal power archetype is and then come back because I’m gonna then explain it. So I’m gonna just leave that banner up there for, for a while for those watching on YouTube.

So, so there are four, four archetypes that I came up with. There is the abundant receiver. There is the spiritual visionary. There is the intuitive navigator, and the authentic originator.

Archetype #1: The Abundant Receiver

Strengths of the Abundant Receiver

So the abundant receiver is great at attracting opportunities in business. That’s, that’s, that’s your superpower. But the shadow comes in is where you are not fully trusting your intuition, especially when it contradicts conventional wisdom. You may also not be boldly, boldly expressing what makes you unique in the marketplace. And you might also struggle with integrating your spiritual wisdom into your business practice.

Making Friends with Your Shadow: The L.O.V.E. Method’s “Let Go and Let God”

So to start making friends with the shadow side and to start really, fully embracing it, I recommend practicing the L in the love method, which stands for let go and let God. So the way that you can do this is before making any business decision, you can do an intuition check in. So take three deep breaths. Let’s even do it right now. Go.

Breathe in.

And breathe in again. One more time.

Oh, that feels good. That helped me calm down a little. But then ask yourself, what does my inner wisdom know about this? And then just be still for a moment and see what comes through. And the first response that is going to come through, most likely, especially after you’ve calmed yourself down, that’s going to be not from your analytical mind.

It’s going to be from that higher self, that deeper knowing. So, so I hope. You hope you’re taking notes. I should have said take some notes today. Well, yeah, you can go back and listen to this again.

It’s okay. Anyway, all right, the next archetype is the spiritual visionary.

Archetype #2: The Spiritual Visionary

Recognizing the Spiritual Visionary’s Gifts

Now, this is someone whose spiritual connection serves them well. In business. You really do are leaning into your intuition most of the time.

But this is where the shadow comes in. Because sometimes, you know, you might still have a little bit of struggle where you’re not fully surrendering. And when things don’t go as planned, especially you may also be struggling with money like I, like I talked about, you know, in not asking for a raise or, you know, you’re not receiving abundant compensation for your wonderful spiritual gifts. And you might also not be clearly stating your value to those, especially those who might not share your spiritual perspective. You might be holding back a little bit.

Practice: Open Your Heart to Receive

So you can start making friends with this, these, you know, wonderful wonder. Well, wonderful well, these expressions that maybe aren’t quite serving you as well as they should be, you can start to start to reframe and.

Readdress, I guess by practicing the O in the L.O.V.E. Method, which is open your heart to receive. So what I recommend is each morning you do a gratitude and worthiness ritual where you write down three things that you’re grateful for. Well, specifically grateful to receive in your business.

You know, maybe it is a new client, or maybe you’re grateful to receive inspiration that helped you create a new product. Or maybe it’s you’re grateful that you have somebody wants to work with you on a project. Like, I’m fortunate enough that I’m going to be co facilitating a retreat in June of 2026 with three other wonderful women. And you’re, you’re going to hear more about that soon. Very, very, very soon.

Maybe even at the end of this podcast I might talk about it again. But anyway, I also want to, after you write down the three things you’re grateful to receive in your business, write this sentence down and say, I am worthy of receiving xyz. So maybe it is I’m worthy of receiving a new client because I am amazing or because I deserve to be successful. Whatever, whatever feels good to you. But yeah, and I will tell you, if you get the quiz, if you do take the quiz, and I encourage you to do this, you’re going to get this information in emails from me.

So, so you don’t have to necessarily write it down right now. You can take the quiz and then you’ll get an email and it’ll tell you all this stuff and then you can follow these. But I just want to plant the seed right now so you can hopefully do that. So, all right, so we did the Abundant Receiver. We did the Spiritual Visionary.

Archetype #3: The Intuitive Navigator

How Intuitive Navigators Make Decisions

The third archetype is the Intuitive Navigator. And oh yeah, so I did get this a little bit confused. I was saying intuition on the other one, that one’s really more about your spiritual kind of your spiritual beliefs. So this one really is someone who relies on their intuition to make decisions. But you still, that shadow side comes up where you’re maybe struggling to fully value what is unique about you.

And, and then you’re not charging what you’re worth. You might also be not actively promoting your business as well as you should. And, and you’re also maybe not quite embracing your role as a wisdom keeper in your field.

Value Your Uniqueness: Finding What Sets You Apart

So for this one, I recommend following the V in L.O.V.E., which is value your uniqueness. So this is, I even have, I have this in my book as well, is so as one of the practices, so take five minutes, maybe every day for at least a week to write down one unique quality or experience or perspective you bring to your business that no one else can offer exactly like you do, and then ask yourself, how can I showcase this gift more prominently today?

So I think for me, one of the, one of the, I think, I guess you know, what is one of my, I guess I’ve got a couple unique qualities that I bring and, and one of which was even when I first started, when I first started my doing SEO copywriting in particular, I happened to mention to my mentor at the time that I used to be a writer and a producer for the Nightly Business Report on public television. And she’s like, omg, you need to talk about that. You need to, you need to make that prominent in your, you know, bio and, and in your, even in your contracts and because as a producer and a writer, I learned how to really distill information down complex economic stories into like 30 second sound bites. And that’s the same type of skill that’s necessary for your website. And I was like, oh yeah, that makes sense.

So see, if you have something similar, you know, what’s, what’s your, what’s something really unique about you that you’re pretty sure nobody else can do or, or you’ve experienced and then start talking about that fact. I might even start talking more about that myself again. Even though it’s been a long time now, but, but it still serves me well.

Archetype #4: The Authentic Originator

All right. Finally, the last archetype is the authentic originator.

Standing Out from the Crowd with Authenticity

And this is someone, I think this is probably someone who’s a little bit more extroverted because they are comfortable standing up from the crowd. They are, they are fine at tooting their own horn. I need more authentic origination in myself. See, and, and this is the thing too. I’ll get back to this, this archetype in a second.

Shadow Work Is an Ongoing Journey

But I just want to, well, it’s on my mind. I want to let you know, is that, that these shadows will still come up, you know, even, even, I think from time to time. And, and even as we, you know, learn to kind of love them and, and, and honor them and say, okay, yeah, thank you, thank you for. I see how I’m expressing you in my life and I want to change course a little bit, not do that as much. So stuff is still going to come up, but eventually it gets easier.

You, you, you start recognizing these things more quickly. I know for me, I definitely, I Do see. See old patterns. And in fact, I talked about this on an episode. Was it last week?

Maybe. I’m not sure. Yeah, it probably was because it was right after my son’s wedding how I. I had this old, not good enough feeling come up at the wedding, but go back and find that I’m not going to get into with that now anyway.

The Authentic Originator’s Shadow Side

All right, so authentic originator. So, yeah, they’re comfortable. They’re comfortable on their skin. They’re comfortable, you know, saying, you know, this is who I am and what I do. However, where the shadow comes in is that they may still not be fully trusting their own intuition and they’re reluctant to surrender control. So they might also be struggling with, then opening their self up, opening your heart, you know, to receive support and abundance. And, and maybe they’re also not.

Maybe they, they really are feeling very spiritual, but they’re not sure how to connect that business to that deeper spiritual purpose.

Embrace Your Divinity: Connecting Business to Spiritual Purpose

So this is where the E in the L.O.V.E. Method comes in, which is embrace your divinity.

So if you find yourself struggling with, you know, these shadows and, and find yourself doing some of these things, or not doing, I should say, even as well. So what you could do is before work each day, you’re going to take those three, three deep breaths again. And now ask yourself, how is my business serving as a channel for divine energy today? What wants to express through me? And then allow your answer to guide your priorities for the day.

Need to take a drink. Sip of. I need to take a sip of water. So I had. Pausing the recording for a second, but I still need to take another sip anyway.

It’s Not About Fixing What’s Broken

Okay, so. So those are the archetypes. And, and I want to get back to this part about. And I know in a way I’ve kind of been. I think I contradicted myself in the beginning when I said we’re not going to focus on fixing what’s, quote, unquote broken.

Well, that’s true. We’re not. And even though I was giving you some suggestions of practices to do, it’s not to fix you. It’s really not. It’s more about helping you to fully embrace who you are and, and to, and to recognize that, yes, you may excel in one particular area and there’s other areas that you can also learn to embrace and to get better at, because then you’ll be a really whole business owner where you can.

Be the best that you can be and, and know that.

There’s always going to be room for improvement.

The Four Agreements: Always Do Your Best

So I’m looking, I’m looking over the side of my computer I’ve got, I have the four agreements. I’ve got a lovely little, it’s like a bookmark and it lists the four agreements. And, and I’m just going to share with you number four, which is always do your best. And it says your best is going to change from moment to moment.

It will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick under any circumstance. Simply do your best and you will avoid self judgment, self doubt and regret.

I mean right there, that’s it. And, and, and that’s it. And so, so yes, there may, you know, these shadows that come up, you know, the self doubt and self judgment and things, they’re going to come up and you from time to time.

Essential Practices for Shadow Work and Self-Love

But when you can start doing some of these different practices and, and, and really my favorite practice of all time. Well, I’ve got two.

The Power of Stillness and Meditation

But the number one is, is spending time in the quiet. So whether that’s a walking meditation or sitting meditation, but just being still and getting to know yourself, that is going to do wonders for you because that’s when you can really just love yourself. I mean that’s what this is all about. I mean that’s what these archetypes are all about, really are about showing you the how, showing you love in practice and, and how to love yourself. Because that’s what it all comes down to.

Self-Forgiveness and Compassion

And, and when we can love our shadows and just, you know, and practice self forgiveness and say, yeah, okay, I wasn’t as confident in that experience as I wanted to be. Well, let’s see if we can do better next time. That’s it, that’s what it’s all about. It’s not, it’s not about beating ourselves up over stuff. I’ve done that and I had a coach call me out on that one time because she, she was like, Gloria, stop, stop beating yourself up.

It doesn’t do any good. So we just have to just acknowledge we’re human. Okay, we are, we are spiritual beings at heart, but we are living in this human body and we’re living in this as a, as a human being. And so we’re gonna make mistakes, we’re gonna screw up sometimes. We’re gonna be, we’re going to have self doubt, we’re going to even have self judgment.

We’re going to have some regrets.

Do It Your Way: Your Personal Anthem for 2026

I’m thinking of this song. What is it? My Way. Yeah. Frank Sinatra.

My, my mom loved this song. You know, regrets, I’ve had a few, but through it all, I don’t know that I’m not. I don’t even remember the exact words now, but, but I did it my way. And that’s what I encourage you to do is, is find a way, do it your way. And that’s what we’re going to be talking about very, very soon.

And basically about starting in 2026, I’m going to be talking about designing your life your way. The podcast is going to have a new look. We’re not going to have the same background on YouTube anymore. It’s going to have a new look. We’ve got a new attitude, and we’re going to talk about just being you, you know, having the courage to be you, whatever that looks like, and just go boldly, boldly go where no one has gone before.

You know, I, I’m a Star Trek fan and I, I love that. So we’re gonna do that. We’re gonna boldly go where no one has gone before. Wherever that is in your life, however that shows up for you, I want you to do that. I want you.

I want that to be Your mantra in ’26, is that you’re gonna. You’re gonna design your life your way. Yeah.

Subscribe and Take the Personal Power Quiz

So before we end the podcast, I, I do want to, number one, I’m gonna encourage you right now to subscribe to the podcast on your favorite podcast platform, whatever that is. Apple, Spotify, Pod Chaser, you know, there’s all kinds of places.

If you’re on YouTube watching this, I hope you subscribe to the channel as well. So you’ll get notifications when I have the new episodes come out.

And I now I want to offer you a. Something that’s unique about me. What I do is I share light language, the podcast specifically. When I do solo episodes. I don’t do it when I have a guest, which I will have guests again in the new year.

Understanding Light Language

So for those of you who, who may not be familiar with light language, just know that it is a form of communication that is a frequency of love. It’s something that I speak and I sing it. I never know quite how what’s going to show up. It just depends on whoever is inspiring me and coming through that day. So it’s something that.

Especially when I sing. I was just reading an article today about how beneficial music is. Singing is for, for our, our brains. It just helps our brains work better. So if you’re somewhere where you’re driving in a car, I encourage you to pause the podcast and come back and, and be somewhere where you can just be still and maybe close your eyes and Just allow whatever I share with you to just wash over you.

Just, just encourage you to come to it with an open heart. Especially not, not even a mind, just an open heart. And, and just let the sound touch your soul. And I always do is when I get ready to do this is I, I ask that and I ask my angels, archangels, galactic beings, elementals to share a message with me that’s for my soul’s highest good and the highest good of all concerned. So I’m inviting you to also set that intention that the message you are going to receive today will be for your soul’s highest good and the highest good of all.

So just going to pause for a moment and then see what comes through today.

Shanokuri…

Closing and Resources

Hope you. Hope you receive that with the love was intended. And if you want to know more about light language, go to my website, go to gloria rand.com you’ll learn all about it. I also offer light language, private light language sessions online. So excuse me, you can, you can get all that information there.

So again, one last time, I do want to encourage you again to take my free quiz. Get your own personal power archetype and, and you’ll get all sorts of information. Like I said, you’ll get a. About 4 emails or so from me with sharing some more examples about how, how this looks and especially when you’re leaning into your gifts. So I hope you’ll do that again.

It’s bit ly forward slash personal power quiz. And I’ll have that in the show notes of course as well. And as I said, you can also just go to my website, go to my website right on the homepage. You’ll see it right at the, up at the top and you can take the quiz right from there. So I think that’s going to do it for this week.

So until next time. Oh, thank you for being here, number one. Yeah, thank you so much for being here. I am so grateful for everyone who listens to this podcast and yeah, it’s been, it’s been a great. I’ve got four more episodes with this incarnation and but then we’re gonna, like I said, 2026, we’re gonna have a new name, we get a new attitude and so, but stick around because there’s some good stuff yet to come and in the last bit of the month here, or last bit of the year actually.

All right, take care and go out and live fully, love deeply and engage authentically.

Spread the love
