3 Reasons Why You Might be Reluctant to Start a Hotel Blog

Starting a hotel blog One of the best ways to enhance hotel marketing efforts is to start a hotel blog. But many small properties and boutique hotels don’t engage in blogging. If you’re a property owner or hotel manager, you may be reluctant to start a blog for one of these 3 reasons:

1. Not worth the time, money or effort
2. Not sure what to write about
3. No time to do it

Let’s take these excuses one by one… so you can see the benefits a hotel blog will provide.

#1 – Not worth the time, money or effort – A hotel blog may not provide an immediate return on investment for the time and money spent to write it, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get some kind of ROI.

Adding a blog to your hotel marketing plan makes financial sense for a couple of reasons. First, it’s a great way to enhance your website’s search engine ranking. The hotel industry is very competitive, so any edge you can get to have your property’s website show up on page one or two in the search results will be worth it.

Google rewards websites that post original, high quality content on a regular basis. Posting weekly articles to your blog can help your hotel’s website move higher up the search engine rankings, so more people will find it. The more people find your listing, the greater chance you have of obtaining higher bookings.

Let’s say, I’m planning a vacation to South Florida. It’s my first trip and I want to stay at a boutique hotel. I also want find out what there is to do in the area while I’m there. I search “boutique hotel south Florida things to do.” A well-written article on this topic in your hotel blog will encourage me to learn more about your hotel, and very likely make a reservation with you. That’s money in the bank!

#2 – Not sure what to write about – Coming up with ideas for blog articles may seem daunting, but it’s really not. Start by putting together a series of articles about your hotel’s history and the amenities you provide. Then, you can start writing about nearby attractions, restaurants, as well as special events in the area. Think of your hotel blog as a travel guide. Write about what your guests would be interested in.

#3 – No time to do it – This is probably the biggest excuse and the one that makes most sense. It does take time to write a blog, so if you don’t have the time, or have anyone in house who can handle it, outsource the job. Find a copywriter who specializes in the travel industry, and who is knowledgeable about search engine optimization practices to write articles for you.
