Visit one of the many YouTube channels lately and you’re going to notice a new layout. The video site has revamped the look to make your branding work across a variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets. You can show off more content to fans, and you can reach out to non-subscribed viewers.
Make your first impression count
One of the keys to successful video marketing is getting subscribers. First, you have to win them over. The new YouTube channel layout provides you the opportunity to feature a trailer that only plays when non-subscribed viewers land on your channel. This is your chance to let them know what your channel is all about and encourage them to subscribe.
If you do any type of videos for your business, I encourage you to create a video trailer ASAP! Don’t let this precious real estate go to waste on your channel. You don’t have to have a slickly made trailer either to be effective. (Although it doesn’t hurt!) Just make sure you have enough light, a simple background and keep your message short. And, very important – remember your call to action: ask the viewer to subscribe to your channel.
Promote a product
You can also take advantage of this new layout to promote a product, such as an ebook. As you see in the image below, instead of listing the URL of my website, I’m promoting a free special report, “7 Tips for Getting Your Website Noticed.” If someone clicks that link, they are taken to the landing page of my site where they can request the report.
Promote playlists, featured channels
The new layout also allows you to curate your own and other content into highly visible sections for your fans to discover what to watch. You can change around the arrangement of your video playlists, most popular videos and recently uploaded to highlight your best content by clicking the little arrow icons in the right corner of each section. In addition, when your subscribers click on your channel from the guide, your full channel appears instead of just your activity feed. Your fans see exactly what you want them to when they click on your channel.
What do you think of the new design? Let me know in the comments below.
The Browse view of your YouTube channel offers two main views: a view for subscribers, and a view for unsubscribed viewers. The subscribed view of your channel is personalized for each subscriber and is based off of each user’s viewing history. The unsubscribed view is your first opportunity to convince potential fans to subscribe and can feature a channel trailer. Across both views, sections are used to organize your videos and playlists.

Choose a video from your library to act as your channel trailer, which auto-plays for non-subscribed viewers. Click on the home icon, and make sure the drop-down says “Unsubscribed trailer”, if you don’t see the trailer selector. Then, click the blue “ Channel Trailer” button.
