What’s Love Got to Do with… My Business?

I’ve been in business for nearly 10 years, working primarily with small business owners, helping them create website content that gets found on Google, and motivates their visitors to take action.

love and business

Nothing has pleased me more over the years than to hear from one of my clients that their phone is ringing because of the changes I made to their website copy.

But over the past few months, something has been tugging at my heart. It’s leading me to shift my focus to something more spiritual in nature. I’ve been wrestling with how to reconcile the two sides – spirituality and business.

I’ll get back to that in a minute. I want to provide you with some context first.

Losing One You Love Hurts

My sister passed away on Dec. 27, 2016 – the same day that Carrie Fisher died. Michaela was my older sister by 10 years, and the biggest cheerleader in my business. She encouraged me, even while she was battling cancer. When she died, my heart was broken. I lost my way for a bit. Grieving was more important than writing a weekly blog post.

It’s been nearly 2 years since she was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma. Since that time, I’ve passed through the worst of the grief, and developed a closer relationship with my higher power in the process. I was raised Catholic, but I’ve always had problems with some of their beliefs. I couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t let priests marry, or let women become priests like the Episcopal Church did.

I’ve been studying the Course in Miracles for the last 5 or 6 months now, and started attending a local Unity church. I’ve also been working with a variety of coaches and counselors. The result has been that I’m finally paying attention to my intuition and acting on it, instead of disregarding it. I believe that my intuition is God’s way of communicating with me.

I’ve Got the Music In Me

As I’ve been trying to figure out how to incorporate spirituality into my business that intuitive voice in my heart has been singing to me. Yes, literally. I hear songs in my head. This isn’t exactly surprising. I’ve loved music since I was a kid. My favorite memory of Girl Scout camp was sitting around the campfire singing songs. One of the reasons I stayed in the Catholic church as long as I did was because I sang in the choir. Singing has always helped me feel closer to God.

Lately, I believe the songs that have been popping into my head are intentional, and have a deeper meaning that I’m supposed to pay attention to.

For instance, as I came up with the title for this article today, it reminded me of the Tina Turner song, “What’s Love Got to do with it.” I had just heard this song on NBC’s The Voice the other day. It was sung by the talented Matt Damon-lookalike contestant, Britton Buchanan.

I Googled the lyrics to the song and realized that it describes me and my business perfectly right now, except for the first verse, which refers to the “thrill of boy meeting girl.” So I made a few changes to it. The amazing thing is that the rest of the song fits where I am at the moment:

You must understand though the business at hand
Makes my pulse react
That it’s only the thrill of serving and still
Opposites attract
It’s quizzical
Only logical
You must try to ignore that it means more than that ooo

What’s love got to do, got to do with it
What’s love but a second hand emotion
What’s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken

It may seem to you that I’m acting confused
When you’re close to me
If I tend to look dazed I’ve read it someplace
I’ve got cause to be
There’s a name for it
There’s a phrase that fits
But whatever the reason you do it for me ooo

What’s love got to do, got to do with it
What’s love but a second hand emotion
What’s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken

I’ve been taking on a new direction
But I have to say
I’ve been thinking about my own protection
It scares me to feel this way oh oh oh

What’s love got to do, got to do with it
What’s love but a second hand emotion
What’s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken

So what’s love got to do with my business? That’s what I’m going to be sharing with you in this blog. God tapped me on the shoulder to write a book a couple of months before my sister died. I wasn’t able to do anything with it last year, but I’m going for it now.

I’ll explore more of what love means to me in the context of business in the next few posts. But for now, just know that I believe I’m called to spread a message of love and hope and joy in the world. And I believe I’m meant to help business owners shine their light in the world, and sing their own unique song.

Hang in there. This is probably going to be a bumpy ride, but one that’s worth taking. And as the Black Eyed Peas say, “I gotta feeling… that tonight’s gonna be a good night.” See what I mean? There are a thousand songs in my heart right now, and they’re all trying to pour out onto the page at once. LOL!

  1. I so appreciate you bridging this topic from a place of exploration and trust. I can relate to how your personal loss catapulted your deeper sense of questioning and spiritual re-awakening. I had a similar experience after losing my Dad. It’s like being shaken awake after a deep slumber to pivot into Purpose. Looking forward to hearing more as you share your wisdom on the journey!

  2. A deep and wonderful blog post and so much of you in it 🙂

We often forget the other side of us in the belief that it’s either not appropriate or it’s all about money and success anyway. We forget to show the deeper us in the belief that it will not be welcome. It is a false belief – and kudos for having the courage to show yourself.
