How to Network Effectively with Twitter – part 5

[tweetmeme]Over the last several blog articles, I’ve been sharing tips about how you can network effectively on Twitter. To recap, I’ve talked about the importance of setting up your profile and showing others what you want to talk about. I’ve talked about sending out personalized welcome messages instead of automated ones. There’s also the value of retweeting other people’s messages, mentioning people on FollowFriday, and linking to other social conversations on Facebook or LinkedIn. In this final article, I’m going to explain how to start conversations, and create more networking opportunities.

Add Value to Your Prospect’s Tweet

An effective way to start talking with a prospect is to reply to one of their tweets and add some value to it. It could be some other useful information, or you could respond by asking a question. The main thing is to show that you are sincerely interested in the topic. If you’re not sincere, you’re won’t get anywhere with that person. Twitter users are pretty savvy and they’ll see right through you.

Make Twitter Introductions

As you see more people on Twitter with similar interests to you, take the initiative and introduce them to each other! This is a great way to strengthen your own network because other people will notice your introductions and make associations.

Host a Networking Tweetup

If for some reason, networking opportunities just don’t seem to pop up naturally, create a reason to network with the people who interest you! Consider hosting a Tweetup – which is essentially a workshop that you plan and promote on Twitter. You can get more information about how to do this by visiting

Leverage the Power of Twitter Lists

An easier first step will be to start a public list of people you recommend on Twitter. You can categorize them according to their profession or any other interest. It’s easy to do this. When you come across someone you want to include in your list, click on their name and you’ll be taken to their profile page. You’ll be given the option to follow and to add them to a list you already have created or a new list.

As you come across people to add to your list, give them a shout out to show you’ve noticed them. You’ll have an easier time connecting with people this way.
