7 Ways to Get Started with Pinterest

7 Ways to Get Started with PinterestWant to start using Pinterest for your business, but not quite sure how to begin? I picked up some great tips from Pinterest marketing expert Melanie Duncan at the recent Social Media Marketing World conference. This visual bookmarking site is a powerful way to drive traffic to your blog. One of my clients has found that 99% of the traffic to her blog comes from Pinterest, compared to other sources like Facebook.

Here are a few ways to begin:

1. Set up your boards. When you create an account on Pinterest, you’re given a few standardized boards to use for pinning. You can start customizing these boards to suit your interests and business, and create new ones. The more creative you can be with the board titles, the better! Set up the following boards for best results:

  • Blog Posts
  • About Me
  • Behind the scenes
  • Video/TV
  • How to
  • Recommend products & services
  • Inspiring quotes/stats

2. Follow the right accounts to get followers.  Like any other social networking channel, the goal on Pinterest is to get followers. The more followers, the more opportunity you have for these people to repin your content, read your blogs, watch your videos, and become your customers! Pinning eye-catching images is a start. The next step is to follow accounts that share the same demographic that you have. These can be your competitors, since they have the same customers and similar audiences.

TIP: Pick accounts that have at least 1,000 followers, so you can leverage the audience they’ve already created. I’ll explain why in the next point…

3. Comment on Pins in your news feed. Most people don’t comment on Pinterest, so this is your opportunity to stand out. When you comment on pins, particularly ones that belong to accounts with large followers, that comment will show in everyone else’s news feed who follows that pinner. This is your opportunity for people to see your brand, check out your pins, and become new followers. Try to add value in the comments, or just say you think the image is pretty cool! The point is to engage.

4. Use contributor boards. These are like group boards where you can have other people pin content to your board. When people accept an invitation to your board, that board now shows up on their account. If you can get someone with a lot of followers to contribute to your board, the potential for exposure across multiple accounts is huge. That’s because when someone comes to a person’s pinterest page that contains your contributor board, and they click follow all, they are now following your board.

5. Use keywords in boards & captions. Google loves Pinterest, so if you take the time to use keywords in your board titles and pin captions, your content could show up during a search. Make sure your “About” section also contains keywords related to your business as well, since it could help you get new followers through Google search as well.

6. Pin when it counts. For best results on Pinterest, pin when your audience is on the site. Popular times are early in the morning or late at night. Most of the demographic of Pinterest is still women, so naturally Saturday mornings are very popular! Aim for one hour a week, and spend 75% of that time creating new pins, 25% relating – repinning, commenting, etc.

7. Schedule your pins. Most people I talk to, and I’m just as guilty, find themselves getting sucked into Pinterest for long periods of time. It’s just so much fun discovering new images to pin and repin. So one way to limit yourself, is to schedule pins ahead of time! This way you won’t be tempted to go on there during the workday. I love Hootsuite for scheduling to Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn, but they don’t have a way to schedule pins. That’s where comes in handy. They have a bookmarklet you can install and then you can upload or pin a bunch of images at once and schedule them ahead of time.
