Facebook Page Admins Can Now Pay to Promote Posts

Are you willing to pay $$ to enable more of your Facebook fans to see your posts? If you have more than 400 fans, you now have that option. Only about 16% of fans ever see the posts from a Facebook page in their news feed. So, if you have some important information to share with your fans, such as a contest, special offer or event, paying to promote those posts might be cost effective.

Every status update, photo, etc. you post on your page now features insight data at the very bottom:

The organic figure describes the number of people who saw your post in their news feed, in the ticker or on your wall. The viral figure describes the number of people who saw your page post in a story from a friend.

When you promote a post, you’ll click on the “promote” link on the bottom right corner of your post. A dropdown menu will appear giving you a suggested budget and estimated reach.

Your promoted post will have to be approved by Facebook’s ad team, so there’s no guarantee it will run, but Facebook says they’ll generally run as soon as they’re created. The campaign will last up to 3 days, and you can pause it if you like. Learn more by visiting the Facebook Help Center.

I’m currently testing this out on my page. So far, I’ve picked up 107 new views for a photo I posted, and spent $1.07 to do it. I’ve had 4 new page views, and one new like. Now, 30% of the people who like my page have seen this post, and 4% of them were reached via the promotion. Not big numbers, but I can still see the benefits of this. The next time I advertise a webinar or workshop, I will spend a little money promoting it. Smart move, Facebook!

  1. I couldn’t resist testing out the paid post promotion at the My Itchy Travel Feet page on Facebook. Like you, I chose a $5 ad. So far, I’m about halfway into the promotion time (ends Sunday night) and have picked up 99 new views with 3 page post likes for $2.30. I think you have to be strategic about paid post promotions, including them in an overall marketing plan.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience, Donna. I agree, being strategic is definitely the way to go. I wound up stopping my promotion early, since I’d rather spend the money on a post that’s more significant – such as for a lunch & learn I will speaking at in August.

  2. I think facebook is out of it’s freaking mind, that’s what I think. I’m not paying for facebook when they’re making all their money by data mining my info to begin with. Kiss my ass.

  3. Instead of having only 16% of your subscribers see your posts, why doesn’t FB make sure that 100% of your subscribers see your posts. FB is supposed to be free and get it’s money from advertisers and dataminers who suck all our information out of facebook and pay for th e privelege. I do believe it’s time to move on.

  4. WHAT?! So now I discover that FACEBOOK does not send my posts to all of my +5500 followers! Only 16% receive my posts in their news feed! So what is the use of having followers if most of them never receive my posts in their news feed anyway?

    Incredible! Now after I have built up my page and found followers…..now I am told that if I want MORE of my followers….not even ALL of my followers………..but more than 16%….(and this figure could be true or not….how can I know?)…..I MUST PAY SO THAT MY POSTS CAN BE SEEN BY PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY SAID THAT THEY LIKE MY PAGE AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE MY POSTS AND BE ACTIVE ON MY PAGE!

    This is really unfair! My personal profile was transformed into a Page a little over a month ago……and I have been wondering why visits to my page had decreased AFTER my personal profile was transformed into a page! I have discovered through private emails that some of my most steady followers were not even able to SEE my page or posts on FB and they thought that I had closed my FB account! WHAT?!

    To be honest….in the last few days I have tried the new “promote” feature and yes, it is true…….if I PAY…….then MORE of my followers get my posts in their news feeds…….not even ALL of them…..just a few MORE!…….THANKS A LOT FACEBOOK!

    Personally, I do not have a lot of money to advertise or pay to promote my posts here on Facebook. I am a teacher. My salary is not a large one ….and even if it were I am not convinced that paying FB money so that people who have already liked my page can see my posts is fair. We……. the users, friends, fans, followers, and the page administrators………are what makes and keeps FB alive!

    I understand that FB wants to make money…….but they are penalizing and alienating their core users. People like me who do not make a living from FB should not be used as kind of captive audience to be treated like sheep who are taken unknowingly to be fleeced or slaughtered on the altar of profits for FB and its shareholders.

    I . do. not. think. it. is. FAIR!

      I understand your frustration, but there are ways to get your content seen by more of your fans that don’t cost money. #1 – Ask your followers to like, comment and share your posts. Facebook will show more of your posts in the news feed, if you have a lot of interaction. #2 – If you still have a personal profile, post “teases” on there to get your friends to visit your page. #3 – Have some fun on your page – don’t “sell” your services all the time.

        Thank you, Gloria for your prompt reply! Thank you also for your suggestions and advice! Fortunately, for me and my followers, my page content on all four of my pages is full of information, pictures, recipes, music (often FREE downloads), free English exercises and tips (I am an online ESL teacher), news about other people other than myself and my activities, and although I am a singer (JALEBI Music) on my page I have not really even asked my music fans to buy anything…..they can click and find out where to get my music after they have listened to it on my page……but I have never expressly asked them to buy a CD or a MP3 download. Maybe I should….that is not FB’s fault! : )) I just prefer a “soft sell” approach to allow my music to sell itself……..but then again ….if you do not ask…..often you do not receive! 🙂 Right? Right!

        However, Gloria… I was and am disappointed to find out that all of my hard work is not being SEEN my the vast majority of the people who have “liked” my personal profile which was transformed into a page a month ago! To discover now that I have in effect “lost” about 84% of my followers is to put it mildly….a bit discouraging!

        Yes, I realize that I am new at managing a “page” and not a personal profile so I may need to adjust my FB communication skills. By the way, I no longer have a “personal profile” because it became my page! Maybe this was a mistake! In any case, my reason for becoming a “page” was so that I could continue to accommodate all of the folks that were “liking” my personal profile!

        Nevertheless, because I believe in my activities and I think that what I have to offer on all of my pages is worth propagating I will just have to see how I can still connect……..without a lot of hassles or money….. with the souls who have liked my pages because they appreciate who or what I am and what I do and have to offer. As my grandmother used to say: “Where there is a will….there is a way!”

        • I’m curious as to why you converted your personal profile to a page. You could have kept it personal, and allowed subscribers instead. Oh well… water under the bridge now, as they say. Also, why do you tag your other pages at the beginning of all of your posts? I’ve never seen anyone do that before. It comes across to me as advertising, but that’s just one person’s opinion. If it works for you, keep at it. You are certainly a multi-talented woman, and I wish you much success!

  5. I just posted an abbreviated explanation of this to my page. I’m upset to find that only 16 percent of my minions are seeing my information that I post, when in ‘liking’ a page means that you want to be kept up-to-date on the happenings of that page!!!
    From a money-making standpoint, this is a good move for Facebook.
    From a grass-roots small business supported by social-media standpoint, this blows. I would rather cultivate small business and relationships between people for free by automatically doing what liking a page is supposed to do – keep you connected.
    Overall, this makes me sad.

    By the way, what other social media is good for small business? I already use twitter and have a blogger. I have a number of other sm’s but I don’t use them quite as often.

      What type of business do you have? If it’s a visual one, you might try Pinterest. A lot of businesses are having success with this new tool.
